You’ve chosen a new home and whether you rent or own you want to be healthy and comfortable in your new nest. Having a clean home is one key to both. Here are a few tips to help you get clean during and after your move so you can get settled. Take advantage of the emptiness of your new home pre-move if you can. It’ll be quicker and easier without stuff in the way.
Dust is an inevitable fact of home life. Most dust is just us - dead skin cells! To remove dust effectively, use a damp microfiber cloth. Rinse it frequently and you’ll actually remove dust rather than just move it around. Feather dusters and the like typically just stir dust back into the air where it will resettle.
CARPETS & UPHOLSTERY
Dust mites and other allergens can build up over time so we recommend vacuuming and even steam cleaning any carpets and upholstery before moving in. Use a machine with a HEPA filter that will effectively trap and contain particles rather than redistribute them.
The simplest step is to open your windows and change out old indoor air for new outdoor air. Studies are showing that indoor air quality is often worse than outdoor air quality. Getting a draft by propping a door ajar and a window on the opposing side of a room is a great way to maximize the flow. This is surely a little easier in warmer seasons but a good idea year round - even just for a half hour or so.
Make scents - on your own by placing a few drops of your favorite essential oil in some warm water (perhaps on a radiator). Or try a natural air freshener by boiling cinnamon and cloves together, simmering, then bottling in a misting spray bottle once cool.
DIY CLEANING SOLUTIONS
You can make simple, nontoxic cleaners in a number of ways (equal parts white vinegar and water is great for glass!) Check out some recipes here (PDF)
